A total of 306 tickets were sold for the school play. They were either adult tickets or student tickets. The number of student tickets sold was two times the number of adult tickets sold. How many adult tickets were sold?

divide 306 by 3
That gives you three equal parts
one part is the adults, 2 parts are the students
306/3 = 102
so, there were 102 adult tickets and 204 student tickets
