Helen had some pink and white hairpins to give away for
charity. She gave away some hairpins and the number
of white hairpins was 3/4 of the number of pink hairpins in
the end. The ratio of the number of hairpins she gave
away to the number of hairpins she had left was 2:3. If
she had 96 pink hairpins left how many hairpins did she
give away?

Let’s assume ‘w’ as number of white pins & ‘p’ as number of pink pins.
So, w = 3/4p
Given number of pins gave away to the number of pins left was 2:3. She had 96 pink hairpins left.
w = 3/4p
p = 96
w = 3/4 * 96 to rewrite equation 3 * 24
w = 72
Total number of hair pins left = Number of white pins left + number of pink pins left
= w + p
= 96 + 72
= 168
Let’s assume ‘x’ as number of hair pins given away
2/3 = x/168
x = 2/3 * 168 to rewrite equation 2 * 56
x = 112
So, she gave away 112 hair pins.
So, w = 3/4p
Given number of pins gave away to the number of pins left was 2:3. She had 96 pink hairpins left.
w = 3/4p
p = 96
w = 3/4 * 96 to rewrite equation 3 * 24
w = 72
Total number of hair pins left = Number of white pins left + number of pink pins left
= w + p
= 96 + 72
= 168
Let’s assume ‘x’ as number of hair pins given away
2/3 = x/168
x = 2/3 * 168 to rewrite equation 2 * 56
x = 112
So, she gave away 112 hair pins.
