oobleck
a∆b = a^2-2ab+b^2 = (a-b)^2

(a) Huh? 2∆(-5) = (2+5)^2 = 49
It cannot be √8
What does R have to do with it?

(b) (x+1)∆x = (x+1-x)^2 = 1
what does "out of x" mean?

I think you have garbled the question.
