Water is a chemical compound consisting of two Hydrogen atoms bound to an Oxygen atom, H2O.
The atoms are held together by electrical forces which can be broken by an electric field. Thus it is possible to split water into Hydrogen gas (H2) and Oxygen gas (O2) with an electric field. Hydrogen can be combined with Oxygen by burning (in an engine cylinder for example), or in a fuel cell to generate electricity. In both case a result is H2O, water.
