well, geez, did you think of plotting the numbers on the number line? Consider the increasing numbers
-10, -6.3, -5 1/2, 0, 3, 4/1, 4 3/4, ...
Big negative numbers are less than small negative numbers, and ALL negatives are less than any positives.
