just look up how many meters are in a mile. How else can you convert miles to meters? You can always multiply by 1 without changing the value. So, since
1 mi = 1609.344 m,
1609.344m / 1mi = 1
1 mi / 1609.344 m = 1
Multiplying by the proper form of 1 allows you to convert one unit to another. The units cancel, just like common factors.

so, to find how many miles in 34.6 km, you do
34.6 km * 1mi/1.609km = 21.5 mi
