the tortoise running 8.8 foot/min, the rabbit gives him 20 min and chases after with the speed 440 ft/min. how many feet the rabbit has to run to catch up?

d + 180 = 8t (rabbit)

d = 2t
d = 8t - 180

2t = 8t - 180

Let x = number of minutes run by the tortoise since the hare started running

Distance = (Rate)(Time)

Distance (in feet) of tortoise since the hare started running = 180 + 2x
Distance (in feet) run by the hare in x minutes = 8x

The hare catches up to the tortoise when 8x = 180 + 2x

6x = 180

x = 30 minutes

The hare catches up to the tortoise in 30 minutes ( Half an hour).

are you sure? it seems a lot! in a half hour the rabbit would have covered 30*440 ft that is 13200 ft, while the tortoise runs 30 min (or 50 if we count the bunnys nap) 30 min*8.8 feet =264 feet (or 8.8*50 min = 440 feet)... the rabbit will be over the hill by then

look at the numbers, the rabbit cannot run for a half hour, that is waaaay to much!

The method was good, though, thank you, it showed me the way!! the rabbit will run 0.4081632 minutes or 179.59 feet when catches up! thank you!
turtle runs 8.8*20 min= 176 feet while bunny napping, so
440*x =8.8x +176
x=0.4081632 (min)
