Calcium carbonate (limestone) dissolves in the water that seeps through the cave walls. As the water evaporates, limestone particles are left behind. As more water splashes to the ground, more calcium carbonate is left behind and hardens. The end results of this process are deposits called speleotherms. Deposits that grow downward from the ceiling are called stalactites. Deposits that grow from the ground up are called stalagmites.
