Online, “*” is used to indicate multiplication to avoid confusion with “x” as an unknown.

From the way you wrote the equation, 23 is not an exponent.

Assuming you have a typo, C is the closest answer.

5 + 8 * 2
5 + 16

The exponent of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication. In 82 the "2" says to use 8 twice in a multiplication, so 8^2 = 8 * 8 = 64 In words: 8^2 could be called "8 to the power 2" or "8 to the second power", or simply "8 squared"

look, 23^3 is 23 * 23 * 23
which is 12,167
That is not remotely what you mean.
Answered by Anonymous
I am pretty sure you mean 2^3 * 2 which is 8 * 2 = 16
then add 5 and you get 21 which is one of your choices
Answered by Anonymous
by the way 2^3 * 2^1 = 2^(3+1) = 2^4 = 16
:)

I can not make any other interpretation of your intention come out to one of your choices.
a^3 = a * a * a
so
2^3 = 2*2*2
= 8

in the expression 2^3
2 is the base and 3 is the exponent
