Matt is repairing a gate and needs to nail a brace diagonally to strengthen the posts. If the height of the post is 48 inches and there is 64 inches between posts, in inches, what should the length of the diagonal brace be in order to fit between the posts?

A. 80
B. 42
C.15

Use the Pythagorean Theorem. The brace needs to be
√(48^2 + 64^2) = 16√(3^2 + 4^2) = 16*5 = 80 inches

You should have recognized this as a scaled-up version of the familiar 3-4-5 right triangle. You can save yourself some calculation by learning a few of the basic Pythagorean triples, such as
3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17, 7-24-25
and their multiples.
