However, some say, "muh-gawr-ee".

I'd say "muh-jawr-ee"
but I know how Italian is pronounced.

Any musician would recognize the gg as similar to that in apoggiatura
Many Americans are familiar with chicken Parmigiana, and might recognize the word as vaguely Italian.

But many Americans are woefully ignorant of foreign languages, so you're likely to hear both of them. Or just some mumbling.
