A linear equation is any equation whose graph is represented by a straight line.
e.g.
y = 3x - 5
or
4x + 5y = 67
the variables of both x and y must be of the first degree, that is, they cannot be squares, or cubes, or square roots, etc.
Anything else is a non-linear equation, which means that their graphs are curves of some type
e.g.
x^2 + y^2 = 100 --- a circle
4x^2 - 3y^2 = 12 --- a hyperbola
