What made the discovery of cells possible?

The cell was first discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665 when he was looking at the dead cell walls of a plant under a microscope. He named the cells, ‘cells’ because they looked like tiny boxes or small rooms and as microscopes weren’t very powerful at the time, he couldn’t pick up much more detail.
