explain why wires are covered in plastic when extension cords are made.

I think two reasons:
1. The wires must be kept separate and the bare wires can't tough; otherwise, a short circuit will develop.
2. We don't want the bare wires to touch anyone, creating a short circuit through them causing possible electrocution.
