gradient is also known as slope ... the change in y, divided by the change in x
the general slope-intercept equation is ... y = m x + b
... m is the slope , and b is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis)
solving the given equation for y ... 2y = - 3x - 8 ... y = -3/2 x - 4
the slope (gradient) is -3/2 , the line crosses the y-axis at -4
