Alex has 8x of them
Jim has 3x of them
8x - 3x = 40

But Alex has forty MORE. How would 8x-3x be equal to that?

Umhh, if Alexa has 40 more, wouldn't the difference between their amounts be 40???
Why don't we solve my equation?
8x - 3x = 40
5x = 40
x = 8
I defined Alex's numbers as 8x , so 64
and I defined Jim's amount as 3x, so 24
doesn't Alex have 40 more than Jim???

henry2,
Jim has X cars.
Alex has x+40 cars.
(x+40)/x = 8/3.
3x+120 = 8x
8x-3x = 120
X = 24.
x+40 = 24+40 = 64.
Alex has x+40 cars.
(x+40)/x = 8/3.
3x+120 = 8x
8x-3x = 120
X = 24.
x+40 = 24+40 = 64.
