Study the scenario.

Avery shakes one end of a spring side to side. The wave travels from her end of the spring to the opposite end of the spring.

Which of the following choices best describes the type of wave generated in the spring?

It is a transverse wave. While Avery moves the spring side to side, the wave moves forward. The two motions are parallel.
It is a longitudinal wave. While Avery moves the spring side to side, the wave moves forward. The two motions are parallel.
It is a transverse wave. While Avery moves the spring side to side, the wave moves forward. The two motions are perpendicular.

If you shake a spring side to side the particles being displaced is from left to right. But the energy is going towards the other end essentially a straight line. So that would be perpendicular. The 3rd choice transverse waves, motion is perpendicular.
