A series arrangement of three capacitors of value 8μF, 12μF, 24μF is connected in series with a 90-V battery.
(i) Draw an open circuit diagram for
this arrangement.
(ii) Calculate the effective
capacitancee in the circuit.
(iii) On close circuit, calculate the
charge on each capacitor when
fully charged.
(iv) Determine the pd across the
8μF capacitor.

2. 1/C = 1/C1+1/C2+1/C3 = 1/8+1/12+1/24 = 3/24+2/24+1/24 = 6/24
C = 4 uF.
3. Q = CE = 4 * 90 = 360 uC = 3.6*10^-4 coulombs = Q1 = Q2 = Q3.
Series capacitors have same charge.
4. Q = C1*V1 = 360
8V1 = 360
V1 = 45 volts.
