This is kind of a question of interpretation in my opinion. In terms of race and economic structure, Melville has some strong Transcendental leanings in his literature. But, with that said, Thoreau's Walden is really a showcase for the various markers of transcendentalism (i.e. nature, individualism, self-reliance, natural sublimity, sentimentalism, etc.). I would be more inclined to say Thoreau as an essayist was the more transcendental of the choices listed.
