Let y=soft drink
y + 3.5y=9
4.5 y = 9
y= 2 , 2 times 3.5= 7
7 + 2 does in fact equal 9
y + 3.5y=9
4.5 y = 9
y= 2 , 2 times 3.5= 7
7 + 2 does in fact equal 9

No
soft drink ---- x
sandwich ---- 3.5x
x + 3.5x = 9
4.5x = 9
x = 2
So the soft drink costs $2.00 and
the sandwich costs 3.5(2) or $7.00
Your total would be $9.50, not $9.00, also 3.5/7 ≠ 2.50
