my teacher doesn't teach us any of this.... please help me

-4x - 2(?) + 1 = 17 - 4x

well the -4x match so for the left side to be equal to the right side
-2(?) + 1 = 17
-2(?) = 16
(?) = -8

check by putting -8 in the missing spot and evaluating.
