Explain how a non metal atom becomes negative.

Lose an electron, become negative.

Bob Pursley isn't at his computer right now but I don't think he would mind if I explained that ADDING an electron to a non-metal makes it become negatively charged.

I agree with Dr Bob; Losing an electron would make it positively charged; Adding electron makes it negatively charged.
