Self-concept is the knowledge that a child acquires about herself. Children go through a long process of learning about the self. They gradually gather information about their physical appearance, physical abilities, gender, intellectual abilities, and interpersonal skills. Gathering such knowledge occurs at about the same time as more general changes in cognitive development, as shown in the next examples.
