A park is 300 yds by 500 yds. There is a 4 wide foot walking path going around the entire perimeter of the park. The rest of the park is green space. How much green space is there in the park?

since the 4-yd path is on both sides and both ends,
(300 + 8)(500 + 8) - 300*500 = ? yd^2
unless the path is 4 feet wide, in which case you need to change it some.
(300 + 8)(500 + 8) - 300*500 = ? yd^2
unless the path is 4 feet wide, in which case you need to change it some.

Oops. I added the path to the dimensions; I should have subtracted. The green area is inside the path.
(300 - 8)(500 - 8) = 143664 yd^2
(300 - 8)(500 - 8) = 143664 yd^2
