Why were many Northerners offended by the extravagant spending of the newly wealthy?

They believed that the wealth should be spread around.
Many people that served the war cause began to starve.
They did not believe in foolish spending during times of war and strife.
They believed the wealth would be short-lived and poverty would ensue.
