9/1 - 7/11 = 99/11 - 7/11 = 92/11 = 8 4/11.

I agree with Henry but like to think of it as:
9 - 7/11
I see I need to borrow so I write 9 as
8 +11/11
so I have
8 + 11/11 - 7/11
so now it is easy
8 + 4/11
= 8 4/11
