Hello. I have an essay question I would like help with. I already wrote it, but I don't feel too sure about it. Please critique it. The question is: The title “Two Kinds” refers to the statement by Jing-mei’s mother that there are only two kinds of daughters: “Those who are obedient and those who follow their own mind.” At the end of the story, Jing-mei puts the title in a different light when she realizes that the ideas “Pleading Child” and “Perfectly Contented” are two halves of the same song. What is the connection between these two meanings of the phrase “two kinds.” Use specific examples from the story to support your answer.

“Those who are obedient” and “Perfectly contented” match each other. “Those who follow their own mind” and “pleading child” match each other. In the mother’s eyes, a pleading child could’ve easily been described with “those who follow their own mind” because it gives off something negative, while “perfectly contented” is something positive based off the mother’s view, which would match “those who are obedient”. The mother hopes for her daughter to be a perfectly contented, obedient child, based off how she treats her daughter throughout the story.

What you've written is NOT an essay!! It's a paragraph. Study this and then use what you've written as the skeleton of the actual essay:

The title "Two Kinds" is based off of when the mother tells her daughter there are only two kinds of daughters: Those who are obedient and those who follow their own mind. In the end the daughter puts the title into a new light by comparing the two kinds of daughters to the songs in her piano book called "Perfectly Contented" and "Pleading Child". Comparing "Perfectly Contented" to "Those who are obedient" and comparing "Pleading Child" to "Those who follow their own mind". She also puts the title into a new view by telling how both of the song titles are half of one song. The way I look at it, is that the whole song would be a person and the titles of each half mean good and bad. The lesson I learned from this story was that there are two sides to everybody, a good side and a bad side.

This took me all day to write because of all the procrasination that happened. Hope this helps! Happy learning!
