Farmer Brown had some animals. One-fourth were horses, one-half were cows, and the rest were pigs. He had 8 pigs. How many animals did he have altogether?
I know you would get a common denominator for 1/4 and 1/2 which would be 4 so you would have 1/4+2/4= 3/4 and then take 4/4 -3/4 which would be 1/4 pigs, but I can't get the rest

Well, as you said, if 1/4 were horses and 1/2 were cows, then that leaves a fourth left of pigs.
Since there are 8 pigs, that means there must be 8 horses, too. And since two fourths make a half, there are 16 cows. Add them all up, and there are 32 animals!
If you have any more questions, write another response back. I hope I helped!

There would be 32 because 8 pigs = 1/4 of your answer. So 8 times 4 = 32 :)
