how to determine the rate of change of a graph if the graph does not show a staircase pattern?

the best you can do is an average rate of change over some interval, say [a,b]
Then the average rate over that interval is ∆y/∆x = (y(b)-y(a))/(b-a)
Then the average rate over that interval is ∆y/∆x = (y(b)-y(a))/(b-a)
