The diameter of a basketball rim is 18 inches. A standard basketball has a circumference of 30 inches. What is the distance between the ball and the rim in a shot in which the ball goes exactly in the center of the rim? Show your work.
First I must find the circumference of the rim
C=pied
C=56.5
Next I subtracted both circumferences from each other
56.5-30
This gave me 26.5
So the distance from the ball to the rim would be 26.5in.
Am I correct

you did it backwards
find the diameter of the ball
then you can find the clearance between them
find the diameter of the ball
then you can find the clearance between them

The diameter is 18 inches, what do you mean to find the diameter?

26.52 inches
C=d*pi
C=18*pi
C=56.52
Difference = Rim C - Basketball C
56.52=30=26.52
C=d*pi
C=18*pi
C=56.52
Difference = Rim C - Basketball C
56.52=30=26.52

This question is asking the distance between the ball and the rim, if the ball is perfectly in the center. The diameter of the rim is 18 in and they give a circumference for the ball. The circumference of the ball is 30 inches. 30/pi is about 9.54. The diameter of the ball is 9.54 inches. That leaves 8.46 inches of room. However, the ball is perfectly in the center, so the distance between the ball and the rim is half of that. 4.23 inches. If you calculate by the tenth, 9.5 inches, 8.5 inches, the answer is slightly different, at 4.25 inches.

Diameter of the basketball rim = 18 inches
Circumference of the standard basketball = 30 inches
Area of circle = π r²
Basketball rim = 3.14 * (18/2)² = 3.14 * 9² = 3.14 * 81 = 254.34 in²
Circumference of a circle = 2 π r
30 = 2 * 3.14 * r
r = 30 / (2*3.14) = 30 / 6.28 = 4.78 inches
Standard basketball = 3.14 * (4.78)² = 3.14 * 22.85 = 71.75 in²
254.34 - 71.75 = 182.59 in²
Circumference of the standard basketball = 30 inches
Area of circle = π r²
Basketball rim = 3.14 * (18/2)² = 3.14 * 9² = 3.14 * 81 = 254.34 in²
Circumference of a circle = 2 π r
30 = 2 * 3.14 * r
r = 30 / (2*3.14) = 30 / 6.28 = 4.78 inches
Standard basketball = 3.14 * (4.78)² = 3.14 * 22.85 = 71.75 in²
254.34 - 71.75 = 182.59 in²
