Do you mean:
2(y + 1) = 2 ?
In that case:
2(y + 1) = 2
Divide by two on both side
(y + 1) = 1
y + 1 = 1
Subtract one from both sides
y = 0
2(y + 1) = 2 ?
In that case:

or... are you simplifying when y=2
in that case you have
2(y+1)
=2(2+1)
=2(3)
=6
