If you're reacting Cu(NO3)2 and BaSO4, they don't react. BaSO4 is insoluble

You are absolutely right.
BaSO4 is barium sulfate. BaS is barium sulfide and I misread the question.BaS is soluble and a reaction will take place.
Cu(NO3)2 + BaS ==> Ba(NO3)2 + CuS
You can turn that into an ionic equation.
The net equation is
Cu^2+(aq) + S^2-(aq) ==> CuS(s)
