The dust storms were created from extreme drought. Everything was turned to dust and before everyone knew it everywhere was dust nobody could see more then a few feet away. Lots of pets and cattle were affected with loss of vision, and suffocation as the air grew thicker. So based on what I read being in a dust storm would be horrific you'd have dust in your mouth, eyes, and ears. Everything would sting as the dust hit you constantly and with no water to cleanse your eyes problems could be an permeant affect.
