B is probably the best answer. Many did come from the East Coast of the US.

Where do you suspect?
I have a hunch they came from a lot of places, but only a few from China and those mostly to build railroads to the gold. People from here (East Coast fishing port) went there looking for gold. (but some returned with none)

Two of my ancestors on different sides of the family came from farms in Indiana and Illinois.
