Why can't we use static electricity to accomplish certain things, such as activate or charge an electric instrument?

Well, it is a bit unpredictable in when it happens(depends on humidity etc), voltage and control. I suppose you could set up a sensor to turn your appliance on when you rubbed it, but let's hope the cat does not come by it :)
