    All you have to do is know what to add up and split up the amount of money paid which is $16. 3 times 2 is 6, 2 is the notebook's cost and then you do 5x which is 5 times x. 5 is the cost of a binder so if I do 3 times 2 then it is 6 so 5 times x will have to be 10. Then if you add the products together then you will get 16 and the amount paid was $16. So the number of binders bought was 2 binders. The equation you would write is ; 3 times 2+ 5x = 16
