A person becomes a member of a cultural group by being born in a particular family within an ethnic group. A person whose ancestors came from Mexico is usually considered a Hispanic.
Of course, you can also become part of a group by voluntarily joining it, like the Girl Scouts. You're also part of a group when you're assigned to a particular classroom.
