vehicles equipped with a high horsepower motor use more fuel than most motors. What does the federal governments impose on these vehicles?

Other than the regular taxes on gasoline, the U.S. government doesn't impose additional penalties.

The penalty seems self-imposed -- the higher gas prices go, the more the owners of such vehicles will pay for fuel and taxes.

I have friends in California who drive only SUVs, one of which is a Hummer -- and they were stunned last summer and fall to realize that it cost about $100 to fill up just one of their cars one time!

They seem to be paying a self-imposed penalty!!
