Their Spanish gold raised numerous buildings in Rome, and their generous patronage won them the favor of the pope (3). Then relations crumbled and led to a war between Spain and Rome, when Pope Alexander VI demanded King Ferdinand institute the now-famous Spanish Inquisition (4).
