Select one civilization you learned about during the semester. Write an essay in which you explain how the structure and nature of government in that civilization a) developed, b) responded to needs within society, and c) succeeded or failed. Be sure to provide evidence and examples to support your ideas. Also, make sure that you define what you consider to be a measure of success or failure.

You should always start an essay by planning it, not starting to write the sentences and paragraphs. Your instructions give you the basics of an outline; then it's up to you to research and find the information for each part of the outline.
I. Introduction, ending with the thesis statement
II. how the structure and nature of government in 15th-16th century Italy developed
III. how that government responded to needs within society (what were the needs in Italian society during those years? how did the govt respond?)
IV. how that government succeeded or failed
V. Conclusion

The history study guide tells you what to write for the essay and where in the textbook it is. it also says u should write the essay questions in the study guide before the test.

I know it's late, but hopefully my answer some people who find this next year.
I recommend writing on either the Egyptian Civilization or the Roman Civilization (I did Ancient Rome, so that will be my example). Rome has a vast amount of material to write on. Describe whether you think Ancient Rome was successful. I said yes because it became one of the most influential and powerful empires in the history of our world.
You can decide to cover the Roman Republic when it was ruled primarily by the senate, and how the TWO social classes of patricians and plebeians forced the government to change over time to better serve the people. Remember that the Roman Republic was one of the first democracies in the world. If you've forgotten, the two classes feuded for a long time since the plebeians weren't allowed to help run Rome, and eventually fought in order to be given the power and rights they deserved. Once this happened, it solved many of the internal issues for a while, but after several centuries was plagued by it again, and eventually led to its downfall.
In body paragraph 2 you could then cover the Empire and how it came to be after the Republic fell when the dictator Julius Caesar was assassinated and succeeded by Augustus, who in turn became the first Emperor of Rome. Be sure to describe HOW it became so wildly successful, and how it improved from its previous democracy (or if you think it was bad). Note how powerful its military was, how rapidly the economy expanded, the change of having both an emperor and a senate, the technological advances, and the vast amount of land they conquered across Europe which all led to it withstanding over 1000 years.
Good luck, I hope this could help at least a little.
