Mrs. Mask looked at another hotel. She waited a week before she decided to book nights at that hotel, and now the prices have increased. The original price was $1195. The price for the same room and same number of nights is now $2075. What is the percent increase? Round to the nearest whole percent. Explain and Show your work.
This what I was going to type.
The percent increase was 8.8%. I figured this out by subtracting $1195 from $2075. Which gave me 880, then I divided 880 by 100. The answer I got was 8.8 and that the percent increase.
2075 – 1195 = $880
880 ÷ 100 = 8.8%

first step is correct:
2075 – 1195 = $880
now you want the percentage based on the original amount, so
880/1195 = ...
now change that to a percentage
You have to learn to get a "feel" for numbers
1195 is almost 1200
the increase is 880 or about 3/4
so 8.8% is a totally unreasonable answer, it would be around 75%, wouldn't it ??

No, the % increase is the change divided by the original amount:
880/1195 = 0.736 = 73.6%
check:
1195 * 1.736 = 2075
and besides, 880/100 = 8.8 = 8800%
consider. 6 is 50% more than 4, because 6-4=2 and 2/4 = 0.50 = 50%
4 * 1.50 = 6
880/1195 = 0.736 = 73.6%
check:
1195 * 1.736 = 2075
and besides, 880/100 = 8.8 = 8800%
consider. 6 is 50% more than 4, because 6-4=2 and 2/4 = 0.50 = 50%
4 * 1.50 = 6
