Yes, there would be no solution.
If your variable disappears and you end up with a FALSE statement, there is no solution
e.g. x +8 = x - 6
if your variable disappears and you end up with a TRUE statement, there will be an infinite number of solutions.
That is, every possible number can be substituted for your variable and the equation would be true.
e.g. 3x + 15 = 3(x + 6) - 3
