During the Renaissance, humanism placed a great emphasis on learning and self-improvement (1). The Catholic Church helped spearhead humanism and encouraged new ideas regarding self-improvement and worship (2). Access to knowledge through books, due to the Gutenberg printing press, encouraged the spread of literacy and provided information to a population hungry for information (3). Yet, libraries did not exist until the 19th century, which slowed progress for peasants and the poor (4).
