Douglas was born a slave and remained to be so until 1838, when he escaped slavery by using borrowed papers of a freed slave and moved to New York. Just a few years before, in 1836, he was hired out and worked in a shipyard in Baltimore. He joined the East Baltimore Improvement Society there in 1837.
