89 + k = -42
89 + k - 89 = -42 -89 (Subtract 89 from both sides)
k = -131 (answer choice D)

if u add 89 to 42 u get 131 right so after u get 131 would it be a negative or a positive well 89 is a positive and 42 is a negative so the result will come out as another positive so the answer would be A} 131

This person above is wrong ("i think i'm right"). Look, you subtract 89 from both sides so that you get the variable you are solving for on the left side. That would make the 89 negative.

-42 - 89 = -131
