ST=x+3 and TU=4x-6 what is the value of ST and SU

I know ST=6 and SU=12, but I'm not sure how to do the problem, can someone explain?

(S, T, and U are all on the same line)

well, since ST=x+3 and ST = 6
x-3=6
x=9
So TU = 4x-6 = 30

Only you know the positions of S, T, and U on your line, so fill in the values

just plug in your expressions. You know that

ST+TU = SU
x+3 + 4x-6 = 12
5x = 15
x=3

Now you can easily find all the lengths.
