well, does -11 make the equation true? Coming up with an answer is only half the battle. You also need to know how to check to see whether it is correct.

5(-11)-(9(-11)-10)
= -55-(-99-10)
= -55-(-109)
= -55+109
= 54

So, I guess you made a mistake. You could have discovered that easily yourself. So, let's do it again:

5x-(9x-10)=34
5x-9x+10 = 34
-4x = 24
x = -6

Your mistake was not noticing that -(-10) = +10

So, checking with -6, we have

5(-6)-(9(-6)-10)
= -30-(-54-10)
= -30-(-64)
= -30+64
= 34
