The Roman Empire had unified the Mediterranean region on both northern and southern seacoasts (1). Following the decline of the Roman Empire, a power vacuum was filled by the Byzantine and Arab Empires (2). Under the Byzantine Empire, the region became Christianized, whereas the Arab Empire became Muslim (3). War ensued, and the Byzantine Empire defeated the Arab Empire for control of the region by using superior military weaponry (4).
