From AD 527 to 565, Justinian I was the first ruler of the Byzantine Empire (1). During his reign, the empire encompassed most of the land around the Mediterranean Sea (2). Under his rule, magnificent monuments were built including the Hagia Sophia church, which at the time was the largest church in the world (3). The city of Constantinople and the Hagia Sophia church was eventually sacked by the Visigoths, and the church was destroyed (4).
