Yes, I think it was Muslim long before 1800 and Morocco was the major power around there by then.

As Ms. Sue points out, the Kingdom of Benin finally was defeated when the British burned the City of Benin in 1897, incorporating what was left of a once-mighty empire into British Nigeria. That was certainly in the 19th century, but it had been powerful for about 600 years before that, waxing and waning in power, in competition with other kingdoms. So, I agree that the question is confusing.
